Welcome to the website of the Historic Forest Hill Community Association. The FHCA was founded in 1984, incorporated in 1986 and granted status as a 501 (C) (3) in 1987. We remain committed to our mission to foster closer relationships among residents of the community, similar community-minded organizations and agencies of the government, in order to improve the quality of life for all the residents of our neighborhood.
The Historic Forest Hill neighborhood was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990 and designated by the city of Newark as a historic district in the same year. It is well described by noted city historian Charles Cummings as an architectural and residential jewel which lays to the east of Branch Brook Park, an Essex County park and the oldest county park in the United States. Forest Hill is one of Newark's most attractive and elegant neighborhoods. It was developed between 1880 and 1925 through the efforts of three prominent families, the Hellers, the Ballantines and the Clarks.
These families lived here, built their great homes here, and served as captains of nineteenth century industrial Newark.
As the neighborhood continues to prosper with its rich mix of cultural, economic and racial diversity, we look forward to an exciting future for our association, Forest Hill and the resurgent city of Newark in which we live. We invite you to explore our website, stop by our events and experience the Jewel of Newark known as Historic Forest Hill.
“It’s a gem on a hill,” said Rose Gordon (VP of the FHCA) quoted in the New York Times Article "Yes We're in Newark"
With the warmest regards,
The Forest Hill Community Association
